CONSIDER AN EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT SURVEY FOR 2026

Botswana was recently ranked 67th out of 69 countries for worker motivation in the 2025 IMD World Competitiveness Report, an indication that the majority of the nation’s workforce is demotivated, disengaged and dissatisfied which ultimately leads to poor performance and low productivity.

Research today substantiates the belief that highly engaged workforces deliver measurably better results across industries. For example, Gallup, a global analytics and advisory firm, reports that businesses with high engagement scores have 23% higher productivity, 18% higher sales profitability and 78% less absenteeism than their less engaged colleagues. Gallup’s Qth Meta-Analysis report also states that, annually, nearly P4 trillion is lost in poor productivity globally because of disengagement. This highlights a crucial need for businesses to invest in employee engagement measures.

Defining Employee Engagement

Experts define employee engagement as the emotional connection and commitment employees have to their work and organization, going beyond just employee satisfaction. Highly engaged employees feel connected to their work, their team and the bigger picture of the company. Measuring this gives leaders insight into the employee experience and shows whether HR strategies are driving results or need improvement.

Key Performance Benefits

Research demonstrates that employee engagement consistently leads to better business outcomes regardless of the industry, company size or economic environment. By comparing business units in the top quartile against those in the bottom quartile, the results show that highly engaged teams are 23% more profitable, achieve an 18% higher sales productivity, a 14% increase in general productivity and a 10% lift in customer loyalty.

Engaged workplaces also experience significantly fewer operational issues, with 78% less absenteeism and 63% fewer safety accidents. Quality improves with 32% fewer defects and 28% less shrinkage from theft. Retention also benefits, as turnover drops by 51% in low-turnover organizations and 21% in high-turnover environments.

Capturing the voice of employees

How can a company know its engagement level and what to improve? Systematic surveying. Data from employee surveys uncovers hidden issues before they spiral. For example, the Achievers’ Engagement and Retention Report tells us that 58% of employees want more frequent engagement surveys, yet only 21% of companies conduct them quarterly. This gap shows up in perception, too, where 83% of executives believe their people are fully engaged, but only 48% of employees agree. There is a clear demand to be heard, but many firms are not listening enough.

Surveys also give employees a structured way to share ideas. In effective survey programs, anonymous feedback encourages honest responses and sophisticated analysis (cross-tabulating answers by department, tenure or role) highlights trends that would otherwise be invisible. For instance, a drop in engagement in Sales Department may flag a leadership or workload issue or a low score on “career growth” questions could signal a need for training programs. Without a survey, these subtleties stay hidden.
