BOTSWANA’S AVERAGE SALARY IS P6,093

As an independent firm specializing in market research, we analyze the implications of Botswana’s monthly average salary on business decisions. The Quarterly Multi-Topic Labor Force Survey (QMTS) of Quarter 1 2024 by Statistics Botswana reports that the average monthly cash earning for wage-earners in Botswana is P6,093, a 1.06% increase compared to the P6,029 that was estimated in Q3 of 2023.

Any facts, statistics or other details relating to the salary survey as used in this article were as published in the QMTS. According to the said report, this headline figure masks a wide array of critical realities, including a significant gender gap where males average P6,493 and females P5,697. The key implication of this data for businesses lies in what this number doesn’t reveal about the workforce’s purchasing power & satisfaction, and how crucial it is for business performance and success.

Average vs real wages

The report further states that the P6,093 average obscures vast structural inequalities. In the formal sector alone, managers average P21,942 per month, while basic occupations earn as little as P1,393. The QMTS furthers states that the estimated median salary for formal employment is approximately P3,948; a more credible measure reflecting the “average” wage of the majority.

It is also reported that, moreover, while average earnings rose 26.5% from 2019 to in 2024, this growth was outpaced by inflation, which surged by roughly 76.1% as reported by the International Financial Statistics from the World Bank. This substantial rise in the cost of essentials such as food, fuel and other essential utilities means that the average worker’s real purchasing power is decreasing, forcing households to cut back on their savings and discretionary spending (World Bank).

Statistic good for decisions

The publication of the average monthly salary gives a guide to employers of the magnitude of the salaries earned in the country. These statistics also help employees to appreciate the quantum of the salaries that they may be getting from their employers. Whilst it is acknowledged that salaries differ per industry, qualification, location, among many other variables, the average salary statistic acts as a yardstick to both employers and employees, particularly in decision making.

Closing the pay gap

For businesses, understanding employee wages is a crucial strategic investment that extends beyond basic HR compliance. According to publicly available information, one US company, Gravity Payments, powerfully demonstrates this. The CEO, Dan Price, implemented a $70,000 minimum annual salary, treating wages as a driver of competitive advantage.

This policy immediately aligned with goals for staff retention and satisfaction, halving employee turnover. Furthermore, it enhanced talent management by fostering fiercely loyal, skilled employees who drastically improved customer service. Employers could also consider using the average salary statistics as a voluntary minimum wage for their companies as they are likely to attain the benefits realized by Gravity.
